        Hyacinth Macaw

      Hyacinth Macaw

Our babies are properly weaned and never, ever forced to wean.  A baby is ready for his or her home when they decide to eat well on their own and do not require hand feeding.  This makes for a well-balanced and confident macaw.  A hyacinth takes approximately 9-12 months before they are weaned.  They mature very slowly and are a super intellignet macaw.

We raise our babies on Kaytee Exact, high fat macaw formula, in addition to our homemade mixture.  Once they reach the appropriate age, they start the day with baked sweet potatoes, natural/unsweetened apple sauce, soaked golden obles, slices of fruits and veggies, along with a good carb.  This teaches babies to start exploring safe foods.  They then move onto a mix we get from www.nuts.com, which is a tropical fruit mix, and macadamia nuts.  The macadamia nuts are unshelled at this time, because they can puncture and injure a young hyacinth.

Our adult macaws are on a fruit, nut, vegetable and carb diet, along with their staple of Oven Fresh Bites Baked Avian Pellet.

Our macaws are well socalized and love being played with.  They are use to commotion and motion all around them, such as barking (courtesy of our dog Molly), meows (courtesy of our cats Goober and Dylan), vacuum noise, other birds, and Pandora.  Their selection of music varies with their mood!
